This is me, sharing my journey with you.
So, if you are anything like me you find Web Development fascinating. You love the challenge, the lifestyle, and the need to constantly be learning something new. This is going to be me, taking you, through my journey.
Intro:
Hi guys, my name is Taylor Belk and up until recently I knew zilch about coding. I became interested after doing an HTML and CSS tutorial on CodeCademy.com. I breezed through these courses and thought I was a pro. I immediately jumped into the JavaScript course with all the confidence in the world, only to be immediately knocked off my high horse. If that sounds familiar you aren’t alone my friend.
So, after getting knocked on my ass and realizing I knew NOTHING about coding or web development, I started looking for every resource I could find. I tried Treehouse, CodeCademy, FreeCodeCamp, OdinProject everything I could think of and everything recommended by all of the self taught developers all over YouTube. Nothing stuck.
The Next Steps:
Throughout your search for knowledge you will undoubtedly get ambushed with the “Coding Bootcamp” advertisements. Yea, you know the ones… “LEARN TO CODE IN 3 MONTHS AND GET A $100,000 A YEAR JOB ALL WHILE WORKING FROM HOME.” Yea… those don’t look scammy at all right?
That is exactly what I thought. I even held off on doing research because it sound too good to be true…. Until I found LAMBDA School. LAMBDA school caught my eye because they do it differently. Some of the things you’ll easily find out from a simple google search:
- Pay nothing after you graduate until you get a job making $50,000 a year or more. After that you only pay 17% of your income for two years.
- Entirely remote
- Full-time or Part-time courses.
The perks above already had me hooked. Once I started doing more research I found a few more things.
- No hand-holding; They give you all the support you need, your in a group called a “cohort” to give you support and socialization and initial connections, but they don’t give you the answers.
- They teach you how to learn. They show you how to find reputable sources and teach you how to think like a programmer.
- They prepare you to find a job; Pair Programming; Code Challenges (typically white board challenge type questions), Projects, Group Projects, Version Control, and a Demo day for your big group project at the end of the semester.
There are so many more perks to this program. With all that being said, I started my LAMBDA journey on 9/17/2018 and that’s what I am going to be taking you guys through, week by week. I’ll share my honest opinions, experiences, struggles and failures. So stick around, subscribe and get updated articles each Sunday night.
Thanks for joining me on this journey guys!
